Evelyn’s story
Posted on January 27, 2019
The story of Evelyn is typical of so many who are first seen in psychiatry due to the predominance of psychiatric symptoms, leading to an admission to a psychiatric ward or hospital. Only after the patient develops seizures and/or a fever is an organic cause considered. Thanks to her husband’s strong advocacy and despite a language barrier, doctors finally paid attention when the work of Dr. J. Dalmau was translated and brought to their attention. Their diagnosis of meningo-encephalitis,lupus and MS, was finally changed to anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, after test results arrived from Spain. Evelyn is still in the early stages of recovery but there is much to hope for. We wish her continued healing and a complete recovery.
