About the Award:

The Scientific Breakthrough Award is the American Brain Foundation’s award to an individual or group whose research has led to meaningful advances in the care of patients living with brain disease. Former recipients of this prestigious award include Dr. Jerry Mendel, the Calgary Stroke Team, Dr. Peter Goadsby, and Dr. Stephen Hauser.

About the Awardees:

Dr. Josep Dalmau is a neurologist who currently serves as the Research Professor at the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies in the IDIBAPS/Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona. He put autoimmune encephalitis on the map by discovering 10 autoimmune encephalopathies that were previously not able to be diagnosed or treated.

Dr. Vanda Lennon is an academic researcher from Mayo Clinic who has authored or co-authored hundreds of publications. In addition to establishing the Neuroimmunology Research Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, her autoantibody research has resulted in leaps forward in the diagnosis and treatment of countless autoimmune diseases. Her name has become synonymous with autoimmune neurology.

Thanks to the work of Drs. Lennon and Dalmau, some autoimmune diseases can now be cured.Their collective body of work has defined and transformed the field of autoimmune and paraneoplastic neurology and has had a major impact on the diagnosis and care of patients with autoimmune neurological diseases around the world.
